Text Messaging in Gmail Makes Life Easier

Whether you call it “texting” or “SMS’ing” one thing is certain, sending an SMS from within Gmail makes life a little easier. Over the past few weeks I’ve found myself reaching less and less for my mobile and instead using the SMS feature in Gmail. I’m not sure why it’s taken me this long to allow it into my daily process but now that I have, it makes me quite happy.

Enable Text Messaging in Gmail Labs

Go to Settings > Labs > Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat.

As a deterrent to abuse, Google enforces a simple quote algorithm that decreases by 1 when you send and increases by 5 when you receive. Additionally, if your SMS allowance ever dips to zero it will refresh to 50 within 24 hours. Help Article
