Google Apps Gets Groups

Posted December 09, 2009 - By Shawn Cheatham | Comments Off

Last night Google announced the release of Google Groups within Google Apps Premiere and Education editions. This marks an imporatant step to help organizations collaborate internally and externally with minimal overhead. The new functionality was seamlessly “switched on” without disruption to Google Apps users and comes at NO additional cost. How’s that for cloud computing!

We’re really excited about this particular addition because it was a gap that we’ve struggled with internally, as well as with our customers. Check out the video and since the UI seemed a bit dated we put together a quick setup guide for admins below.

Google Groups Setup for Google Apps Admins

  1. Go to the Dashboard
  2. Click Add more services
  3. Add Google Groups as a new app
  4. Back on the Dashboard click Groups (user-managed) which should be Active
    • Configure the the Groups app
    • Optional: set custom URL
  5. Click the URL beneath Groups (user-managed) e.g. groups.google.com/a/YOUR-DOMAIN.com
    • Note: we found that creating a group from within the Control Panel seemed like a dead-end
  6. On your Groups URL Create a group and edit accordingly
    • Reminder: be sure to double-check the app and group settings

Cheers!
